Protection of coffee fruit against Hypothenemus hampei by insecticides: the older, the better?

Palavras-chave: Broca do café. Eficácia de controle. Fosforado. The coffee berry borer (CBB), Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari, 1867) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a key pest in coffee (Coffea spp.: Rubiaceae). The females initially feed on the mesocarp and later on the endocarp, where they build galleries, laying eggs in the seeds. Feed by the larvae reduce the weight and the quality of the coffee beans. This endophytic feeding behavior is challenging when applying currently available insecticides, which usually require contact exposure before the insects bore into the berry. In addition, there is a need to find effective substitutes for the banned endosulfan, which for the last 30-40 years was the most effective insecticide used against CBB. In this study, the efficacy, the residual effect, and fruit protection were evaluated for the insecticides chlorpyrifos, bifenthrin + carbosulfan, and ciantraniliprole. The bioassays were conducted using leaf- or fruit-dip methods. Insect mortality and the extent of the boring into the coffee berry was monitored after insecticide application at the recommended concentration in coffee fruits and leaves in the laboratory and in the field. In the latter case, the treatments were applied by spraying coffee fruits at 77 days after the beginning of flowering. In the laboratory bifenthrin + carbosulfan and chlorpyrifos showed mortality ≥ 80% on fruits and leaves, with a lethal time of 2-4 h. Cyantraniliprole only reached such efficacy after 48 h of exposure. In the field, chlorpyrifos had the longest residual effect causing mortality ≥ 80% up to 43 days and protecting of the seed; initially, the exposed CBBs died before boring into the fruit and then only penetrating until the mesocarp. Bifenthrin + carbosulfan caused mortality ≥ 80% up to 22 days, but with fruit protection up to 43 days. Ciantraniliprole only caused 28% mortality and somewhat protected the seeds until 15 days. These results indicate that bifenthrin + carbosulfan and chlorpyrifos are promising insecticides for the protection of coffee beans against H. hampei. This research allowed us to identify promising insecticides to control the coffee borer effectively, which is important to protect coffee beans, manage the insect population level and slow the development of resistance faster than expected in populations of this key pest.
