The Melaleuca alternifolia Cheel (melaleuca), also known as "Tea Tree", is a plant belonging to the family Myrtaceae. Recent studies show the use of essential oils for medical use: anti activities, acaricides, antimicrobial. Because of its medical importance, the study of the chemical and pharmacological features has been widely developed. However, the steps after the harvest, including drying, have not received such attention. This study aims to evaluate the influence of the temperature of air-drying on the content and chemical composition of essential oil Melaleuca alternifolia Cheel. To achieve this goal an experiment was conducted where the plant under study was submitted to drying, using hair-trays, with heated air at 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 °C. The influence of air temperature of drying was evaluated through extractions of essential oil of the plants of melaleuca in Clevenger apparatus and its analyses on the gas chromatograph (GC-MS and GC-FID). It was concluded that: the levels of essential oil extracted from crushed dried plants were not affected by different drying temperatures, however, the drying caused reduction in the essential oil extracted from the fresh Plants crushed; The drying caused significant increase in content of terpinen-4-ol and a-terpineol and significant decreasing in the a-pinene on plants fresh ground. The ground plants can be dried with air temperature of drying up to 80 °C, w ithout damage the quality of essential oil. |
