Buscou-se analisar o modo como essas crianças se relacionam, visando interpretar o conjunto de manifestações culturalmente construídas e generificadas. O universo da pesquisa foi composto por crianças com faixa etária entre sete e treze anos, moradoras de dois bairros populares da cidade de Viçosa MG. A investigação se deu a partir de uma perspectiva etnográfica e a pesquisa recorreu à observação direta. Durante o trabalho de observação, percebeu-se uma linha divisória entre grupos de meninos e meninas, indicando que estes compreendem seus papéis sociais e de gênero como distintos, através de suas representações que expressam masculinidades e feminilidades. Enquanto brincam, as crianças apresentam uma segregação tanto dos espaços ocupados como de suas ações e seus corpos. Nas brincadeiras de e para meninos, há, além de uma afirmação da masculinidade, uma disputa por ela. Num outro extremo, as meninas, muito menos freqüentes nos espaço da rua que os meninos, sintetizam suas brincadeiras ao universo cotidiano, na representação de papéis familiares e/ou de vizinhança. A interação pelo conflito pode ser considerada uma forma de meninos e meninas interagirem num mesmo espaço. Em brincadeiras e jogos mistos, ainda que façam parte da mesma equipe, as crianças se dispõem separadamente, em oposição. Muito do que as crianças representam sobre o que é socialmente aceito para meninos e meninas, tem origem no que elas entendem como próprios ou não a cada um, ou seja, as crianças se constroem como meninos-homens e meninas-mulheres , a partir das concepções do que é proibido ou tolerado para cada um dos sexos.The aim of this dissertation is to bring up a reflection on the social construction of gender in the childhood sphere, emphasizing the context of street games played amongst boys and girls. The purpose is to analyze the way on which these children relate to each other, aiming to interpret the set of facts culturally built and typified. The universe of this research consisted of children at seven and thirteen years-old, living in two working-class neighborhoods in Viçosa MG. The investigation started with an ethnographic perspective, developing afterwards in direct observation. Therefore, it was possible to notice a dividing line between the groups of boys and girls, showing that they understand their social and gender roles distinctively through the representation of what expresses masculinity and femininity. Whilst playing, the observed children showed signs of segregation, not only by the way they occupy their surrounding space, but also trough their actions and their body language. For instance, boys games are intended just for boys, and besides the affirmations of masculinity, there is in fact, a dispute for it. On the other extreme, girls, are not as regular on the streets as the boys are, and they end up reproducing in their games their daily universe, performing the family and/or neighbour roles. By interacting in a conflicting manner, boys and girls display how they can share the same space. In mixed games between boys and girls, even when they are in the same team, boys and girls place themselves separately and in opposition. Much of what is displayed by those children show what is socially accepted for boys and girls, boasting their origin and what they understand as being proper or not.
