Psychotria ipecacuanha is a perennial, medicinal herb that grows in clusters in the understory of humid, shady areas of the Atlantic Rain Forest of southeastern Brazil. The present study characterized the clonal propagation, the variation in floral traits, and the fecundity 35 clusters from three wild populations of Psychotria ipecacuanha. The clusters were evaluated from November 2001 to December 2002. Visiting intervals ranged from 15 to 30 days. The clusters displayed circular or elliptical shape with very well delimited borders. The majority of the clusters occupied up to six m 2 and presented less than 110 stems. An average stem within a cluster exhibited about 20 cm of height, with about 11 nodes, and up to seven totally expanded leaves. The species showed a relatively short, well defined period of flowering that initiated by mid-November and extended through mid-January. Fruits were observed from late December up to April. Flower and fruit production were synchronized among all clusters, regardless the floral morph. Field observations showed that the clusters are isomorphic, that is, a given cluster present either long-styled or short-styled flowers. The populations are isoplethic, that is, a given population exhibit an equilibrium 1:1 ratio of floral morphs. Stigmas and anthers are reciprocally placed in each morph, a dimorphism characteristic of distyly. Anther length, sigma length, corolla diameter, number of pollen grains per anther, and pollen grain diameter were greater in short-styled flowers. Significant differences for floral traits were found at the among-population level for the short-styled morph. Regarding long-styled morph, only stigma height and corolla length did not exhibited significant differences at the among-population level. Controlled pollination carried out in the natural populations showed that fruit production was higher after inter-morph pollination. Nevertheless, observation of pollen tube growth in style together with fruit production after spontaneous self-pollination and intra-morph pollination suggested the presence of intramorph compatibility in this plant species. Taken as a whole, the attributes of fertility (number of inflorescence per cluster, number of flowers per inflorescence, number of infrutescence per cluster, and number of fruits per infrutescence) did not distinguished between clusters with short- or long-styled flowers. Larger number of fruits per cluster was found in clusters of long-styled flowers and, therefore, reproductive success was higher in this type of cluster.
