Currently the Brazil occupies a prominent position in the global context of food production, placing it as the fourth largest producer and exporter of swine meat, this being one of the most consumed foods. The Brazilian productive model of swine farms is heterogeneous with diversified production processes that adopt different constructive models, structures, types and production systems. Much of the Brazilian swine farming is exploited by smallholders that dedicate to industrial swine farming or livelihood. In the Federal District (FD), a program to preserve and improve the sustainability of swine family farming has been developed. The Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) method, developed to facilitate the practice of layout design is structured on the phases of analysis, research and selection, which is applied in several areas, including family farming livestock. This work aimed to study the conditions of the production systems, zootechnical exploration and sustainability of the family swine farming of the FD, as well as of the two Federal Institutes (FI) Campuses of the Central West region of Brazil, in order to develop and propose a physical arrangement applied to "family swine farming", by the methodology of SLP. In the period April 2012 to March 2013, visits were made on 20 family farms in the FD and in the Teaching and Production Units (TPU), aimed to collect information and data on: preparation of the profile of farmers, characterization and typology of swine units, production and zootechnical performance, physiological indicators of animal welfare, determination of the individual indexes and degree of sustainability of the farms, identification and characterization of the flow of activities, chart and diagram of interrelationships of the installations and other procedures of the SLP. The results were submitted to descriptive analysis, allowing the following conclusions: 1- the swine exploration had tertiary importance in the xxviihousehold income of 70% of smallholders of the FD; 2- the cycle of piglets production in feedlot was the main activity, originated from of maximum of 10 matrices; 3- the prevalent building typology was inappropriate, being the multipurpose sheds as the main type of installation; 4- zootechnical performance and health of the animals was inadequate; 5- the amplitudes of individual sustainability indexes of the social, environmental, political- institutional and economic dimensions were from 0.333 to 0.916, from 0.250 to 0.916, from 0.333 to 0.750, from 0.166 to 0.750, respectively, indicating variation in the degree of sustainability of the farms from poor to excellent, while 20% had good degree, 5% excellent and the major negative influences were caused by environmental and economic dimensions; 6- the route propitiated by physical arrangement of the IFB-Campus Planaltina was approximately 2.5 times higher than the unit of IF Goiás-Campus Ceres; 7- the evaluated environmental thermal conditions, based on the values of Dry bulb temperature (DBT), relative humidity (RH) and black globe temperature and humidity index (BGTHI) in swine facilities of the TPUs of the FIs, were considered inadequate in the afternoon, although the occurrence of heat stress was not observed, according to the animal welfare physiological indicators used; 8- it was noted that each TPU had specific characteristics regarding the implantation, management and productive structures; 9- the SLP tool allowed to evaluate the physical arrangement of the TPUs, verifying bond of them with the welfare of animals and users; 10- the main conflicting point in flow of activities in the TPUs of swine farming occurred in the routine management and hand labor employed; 11- it was observed thirteen types of facilities for the operation of swine production systems of the TPUs, where the management center was a main installation; 12 - it was developed a proposal for a physical arrangement of simplified sectorization to the reality of "smallholder swine farming". Considering to the above, it is suggested that, prior to the development of public policies to serve the family swine farmers, further studies and implementation and evaluation of the innovation of the suggested model are disseminated through demonstration units, so that the proposals are converted into viable shares to the reality of this specific group of swine farmers.
