The sequestration of gases that cause global warming has been discussed in various projects in which photosynthetic organisms absorb carbon dioxide and transform it into biomass. Microalgae have photosynthetic apparatus to carry out this sequestration. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of Chlorella sp. the sequestration of atmospheric emissions originating from waste incinerator. The incineration gas was treated in a system composed of cooler, cyclone, venturi scrubber and a haze remover. The effluents did not exceed the limits allowed by CONAMA Resolution 316 of 2002 most of the time. In three photobioreactors microalgae were grown with gas incineration and other three with pure CO2 to evaluate the difference in the treatments. The sequestration of CO2 was measured by biomass. Growth curves were prepared by quantifying the biomass, cell counts, chlorophyll-a, chlorophyll-b and chlorophyll-a+b. The results obtained for biomass in g L-1 were 0,07 ± 0,4307 for treatment of gas combustion and 0,4889 ± 0,09 for pure CO2. The sequestration of carbon dioxide was (0,8971 ± 0,16) g L-1 and (0,7904 ± 0,12) g L-1 for cultures with pure CO2 gas and incineration, respectively. The growth rate achieved was (0,0918 ± 0,001) d-1 and (0,0982 ± 0,003) d-1 for the residue and pure CO2, respectively. Cell counts refer to values of around (7,9 × 106 and 9,8 × 106) cells mL-1 for cultures with incineration and pure CO2, respectively. For chlorophyll-a growing CO2 incineration reported values of (2,3 × 10-4 and 5,9 × 10-5) pg cell-1, while for the culture with pure CO2 values ranged from (2,6 and 1,2) × 10-4 pg cell-1. Results of (8,57 and 9,26) × 10-5 pg cell-1 were found for chlorophyll-b in culture with incineration CO2 and pure respectively. For chlorophyll-a+b the results were (2,44 and 2,78) × 10-4 pg cell-1 for treatment of waste CO2 and pure, respectively. The data were evaluated at 5 % probability and there was no statistical difference between treatments for any analysis. Thus, microalgae grown with gas incineration proved to be resilient and showed growth similar to cultures with pure CO2. Additionally the lipid production by cultivation was evaluated. A comparison was made between the lipid content in the inoculum grown in medium Watanabe and cultures of the experiment, cultured in medium Watanabe with low nitrogen. The inoculum had a lipid content of 16,17 %. The results for the medium with low nitrogen were (16,60 ± 2,85) % and (18,07 ± 0,67) % for gas combustion and pure CO2, respectively. Statistically, at 5 % level of probability, the treatments did not differ. Thus, this study may provide a subsidy to build full-scale photobioreactors to sequester emissions of industrial incinerators. Additionally the use of microalgae for biofuel production could be a lucrative alternative to the enterprise.
