The biophysical and biochemical characteristics present on a leaf, which when interacting with electromagnetic radiation, naturally from the sun, gives the plant a spectral signature. This spectrals property is used in remote sensing, to gather information about the vegetation in a non-destructive manner. This gathering of information can be by vegetation indexes or through correlations through regression models such as PLSR. The present work had as main objectives: 1) to understand the information of the species strategies of the subshrub herbaceous stratum of a Cerrado area in the Paraopeba National Forest by means of vegetation indexes calculated through the spectral signatures of Species; 2) to ascertain possible correlations of anatomical traits and spectral regions of the Pterandra pyroidea A. Juss. For this, five leaves of five individuals of the species were collected: Ageratum fastigiatum (Gardner) R.M. King & H. Rob, Baccharis tridentata Vahl, Pterandra pyroidea A. Juss and Sabicea brasiliensis Wernham, found in two physiognomies with different brightness intensity (Cerrado sensu stricto and Cerradão). After the collection of spectral data, it was calculated Four Spectral indices: Anthocyanin Reflectance Index (ARI), Carotenoid Reflectance Index (CRI), photochemical Reflectance Index (PRI) and Red-Edge Vegetation Stress Index (RVSI). The Variations between species and environments have been analyzed through Analysis of Variance. Trace-spectral correlations were analyzed through spectral traits and anatomical traits collected from 13 Individuals of P. pyroidea. A regression of partial minimum squares (PLSR) was held to verify correlation and cross-validation between each anatomical trait and each region of the spectra. Regarding the variance of indexes, PRI and CRI were significantly different between phytophysiognomies (p < 0.05). In the Cerrado sensu stricto, PRI, CRI, and RVSI showed different values among the species. In Cerradão, A. fastigiatum showed the highest values of PRI and S. brasiliensis the lowest values of RVSI. The variation of ARI was not significantly to any phytophysiognomy. Regression analysis generated 18 models with the coefficient determination of calibration (R 2 Cal ) ranging from 0.008 to 0.867 and root mean square error (RMSE) From 2.38 to 39.43%. The best coefficients were observed in the models with the total spectra (Full Range 400- 2500 nm). While Near Infrared Region (700-1300 nm) showed a moderate correlation (R 2 Cal ≈ 0.5) with leaf thickness, mesophyll thickness, and parenchyma palisade. The other thicknesses measures, the correlation was considered moderate or weak. The indexes the CRI and PRI detected variations of carotenóides; PRI it was also efficient in the indication of variation in photosynthetic efficiency in phytophysiognomies. Regression model’s results were not satisfactory, even though they were like those found in the literature. Possibly, the reduced sample number influenced the generation of regression models, causing a very large discrepancy between the coefficients of regressions and cross-validation. Tests with different preprocessing proved necessary. With our results, the vegetation indexes showed a valuable tool for explore the different physiological strategies under abiotic factors different and under same conditions.
