The air temperature is one of the most limiting climatic factors for the expansion of sour passion fruit in some Brazilian regions. At appropriate temperature conditions or air temperature ranges, the plants are positively affected and influence the germination, growth and development processes of passion fruit. Although there are studies related to the influence of the air temperature on the control of the initial growth of several agricultural crops, the information about this subject in the passion fruit is still scarce and its relation with the selection of promising and adapted genotypes in the thermal conditions of the Brazilian Southeast . The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of air temperature on the emergence of seedlings and the initial growth of passion fruit during seedling formation, by estimating the cycle duration, lower base temperature, thermal time, leaf emission velocity and leaf expansion in different sowing seasons throughout the agricultural year of 2015/2016. The experiments to elaborate the chapters s I and II were developed in the Department of Plant Science of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, both in a factorial scheme 5 × 3, in the completely randomized design, referring to five temperature ranges and three genotypes (chapters I) and five temperature amplitudes and three no genotypes (Chapters II), both with six replicates and 25 seeds per plot. The experiments of chapters III and V were developed in the Department of Plant Science under the conditions of a greenhouse, in randomized blocks, in the factorial scheme 6 × 6, referring to six sowing seasons and six genotypes of passion fruit, in order to estimate cycle duration, lower base temperature, thermal time, phyllochron and leaf expansion during the formation of passion fruit seedlings. The experiment of chapter IV aimed to develop reliable mathematical equations to estimate the leaf area directly in passion fruit plants using simple linear measurements for each leaf format observed in the cultivation of passion fruit (lanceolate, bilobed and trilobed). Linear measurements of leaf length and width were performed and then measurement of the actual leaf area of the leaves collected with leaf area measuring equipment. From these data, regression analyzes were performed between the actual leaf area and the respective measurements of length, width and product between the two. To select the most appropriate form for determining the leaf area, we used parameters such as the statistical indicators referring to the correlation coefficient "r", Willmott index "d" and the confidence index of the "d" models. In trials I and II, concluded that the temperature ranges of 20-30 ° C is the most suitable for evaluation of emergence and vigor of seedlings of cultivars of passion fruit. The period for the formation of passion fruit varies from 61.2 a 129.4 days and are dependent on the thermal conditions of the air. The base temperatures for passion fruit were 10.5, 9.5, 16.0, 13.5, 13.2 and 14.5 ° C, respectively, for the genotypes UFVM0115, UFVM02015, UFVM0315, BRS SC1, BRS GA1 and FB 200 Yellow Master. The accumulated thermal time of the genotypes for seedling formation was 1,241.9 ° C day in UFVM0115, 1438.5 ° C day in UFVM0215, 943.5 ° C day in UFVM0315, 1017.6 ° C day in BRS SC1, 1,028.2 ° C day in the BRS Giant Yellow and 902.5 ° C day in the FB 200 Yellow Master. The cultivars FB 200 Yellow Master, BRS SC1 and UFVM0315 require less accumulation of thermal units for the emission of a leaf on the main stem. The temperature of the air influences directly the speed of emission and leaf expansion during the formation of the seedlings of passion fruit. The determination of leaf area in passion fruit plants, regardless of leaf pattern, can be done through the product between length and width with high precision. The estimated equations for each leaf pattern were ŷ = 0.25 + 0.64x (lanceolate), ŷ = -4.82 + 0.69x (bilobada) and ŷ = - 0.81 + 0.54x (trilobada). The thermal conditions of the air influence the formation of passion fruit seedlings, mainly in relation to low temperatures and air temperature amplitudes, requiring a longer period of time to be taken to the field. It is possible to obtain genetic material more adapted to the climatic conditions of the Brazilian Southeast region, using variables of growth and development of the plant and its relation with the thermal conditions.
