Propolis, anthocyanin and naringenin effects on normal and diabetic rabbits
Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by frequent elimination of urine, excessive thirst, weigh loss and high levels of triacylglycerols and glucose in the blood. In this work, the effects of propolis and flavonoids were verified on normal rabbits and on rabbits having diabetes induced by the drug aloxane. The experiment was divided in three biological assays. In the first assay, the animals were undergone treatment with propolis in the form of 150 mg tablets and with a flavonoid mixture, in the form of capsules, containing 10 mg anthocyanin and 10 mg naringenin. In the second assay, other rabbits were undergone treatment with propolis in the form of 150 mg capsules and with anthocyanin also in 20 mg capsules. In the third assay, the possibility of adverse effects that the substances tested in the two previous assays could cause to the mineral, protein, fat and carbohidrate metabolisms of healthy animals was verified. The results of the first assay indicated that the application of aloxane caused loss of corporal weight and increased the triacylglycerol and glucose levels in the blood plasma of the animals. It was also verified that propolis as well as the flavonoid mixture produced considerable earnings of corporal weight in the groups of animals treated with those substances. Besides, even not being statistically significant, those substances caused visible reduction in the glucose and triacylglycerol levels of the rabbits’ blood. In the second assay, an increase of glucose and triacylglycerol levels in the animals’ blood, as well as loss of corporal weight, was verified after the application of aloxane. It was also observed a tendency for propolis and anthocyanin to produce some weight earnings in the animals. With relation to triacylglycerol and glucose levels, it was verified a tendency to reduction of those constituents in the blood of the animals treated with the above mentioned substances, although the results were not significant from the statistical point of view. Finally, in the third assay, it was verified that, in general, the substances tested in the two previous assays did not cause considerable adverse effects on the metabolism of healthy rabbits.
