Dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) intakes; body composition, energy, protein, Ca, P, Na, K and Mg requirements; metabolizable energy efficiency of utilization (MEEU) for maintenance and weight gain; gastrointestinal tract content (GITC); and internal organs and gastrointestinal tract weights were evaluated. Fifty F1 Limousin x Nellore bulls, averaging 14 months of age and 330 kg body weight (BW) were used. Five were used as reference bulls, five were fed for maintenance, and the remaining were uniformly allotted to a completely randomized design, with ten treatments with 25, 37.5, 50, 62.5 and 75% of concentrate in DM and two diet balance methods (one isoproteic and the other changing protein as energy of the diet changed). The roughage used was coast-cross grass hay (Cynodon dactylon). The animals were ad libitum fed until reach the slaughter weight (500 kg). The net energy requirement for maintenance was estimated as the intercept anti-log of the equation obtained by linear regression between the logarithm of heat production and the metabolizable energy intake (MEI). Regression equations of the logarithm of protein, fat, energy, Ca, P, Na, Mg or K body content were fitted on the animals logarithm of empty BW (EBW). By deriving these equations, the xiiEBW gain composition was obtained. The MEEU for maintenance (km) and weight gain (kf) were calculated from the relationship between the net energy concentration, for maintenance or gain, respectively, as a function of the ME of the diet and the kf was also calculated as the linear regression coefficient between retained energy (RE) and the ME intake. Regression equations to predict the body composition, as well as the GITC, internal organs and gastrointestinal compartments weights were fitted on the treatments. The concentrate levels (CL) did not influence the DM and OM intakes, which had mean values of 7.39 and 7.08 kg/day, respectively. Increasing the CL, NDF intake, in kg/day and as live weight (LW) percentage, had a linear decrease and TDN intake, in kg/day, increased linearly. Because of the interaction between CL and diet balance method for CP intake, in the diets with variable protein levels, the CP intake increased linearly, while the isoproteic diets were not influenced by the CL, with mean value of 0.89 kg/day. The net energy requirement for maintenance was 76.36 kcal/EBW 0.75 . To estimate the daily RE, in Mcal, it is suggested to use the equation: RE = 0.038 x EBW 0.75 x EBW gain 0.9896 . The following equation is suggested to estimate the retained protein (RP), in g/day, as a function of EBW gain, in kg/day: RP = 174.14524 x EBW gain. To change the EBW gain requirements into LW gain requirements, it is suggested to multiply the EBW gain for 1.02. The MEEU estimated for maintenance was 0.68 and, for weight gain, it can be used the relation among the net energy for gain (ELg), estimated by the equation: ELg = 49.9277 – 65.6367 EM + 29.0034 EM 2 – 4.20456 EM 3 , and the ME concentration of the diet. The relationships g Ca/100g of RP and g P/100g of RP were 8.70 and 3.46, respectively. The net Ca requirements were greater than that stated by AFRC (1991) and by NRC (1996) and the net P requirements were similar to that of the AFRC (1991), but greater than to that of the NRC (1996). The Na and Mg dietetic requirements were similar and that of K were lower than that related by NRC (1996). The GITC (8%), the head-foot-tail group (5,6%) and the leather (9,3%) constituted a significant (22,9%) proportion of F1 Limousin x Nellore bulls BW.
