Soils and environmental indicators in the “Canal Caboclo Bernardo” region rio Doce delta, ES

The delta of the Doce river, in State of Espírito Santo, consists of an environmental complex from an eminently sedimentary origin with predominance of the hydromorphic soils. In the 60-ies, the Federal Government through the “Departamento Nacional de Obras e Saneamento” (DNOS) began the drainage of the area without a more detailed knowledge about the soils existing there, in order to inciting the agricultural use. In recent years, the town halls of Aracruz and Linhares cities in association with Aracruz Celulose Company accomplished the construction of the Caboclo Bernardo Channel in order to solve the chronic problem of the cyclical droughts in this region due to the phenomenon "El Nino". A part of the old drainage canals opened by DNOS were used in this construction. Some land owners have been relating the reduced productivity of the cocoa trees and pastures to the opening of this channel. They argue that the channel is the responsible for the lowering of the water table level, therefore for the lowest availability of subsurface water for crops. Thus, the following objectives were proposed in this study: to evaluate the environmental impacts of the Caboclo Bernardo Channel opening with emphasis on the soil properties and agriculture-livestock productivity in those xproperties located in the channel-influenced area; to characterize and map the main soil classes on southern margin of the Rio Doce delta, State of Espírito Santo; and to identify the water table level, by using the Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR). The selected soils were morphologically described, as well as physical and chemically characterized. The Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) was used for the identification of the water table level and variations in the soil texture. The pH of the water was measured along the drainage canals, under field conditions. Updated satellite image and the historical sequence of aerial photographs were used to supporting the field activities and later the office. In the area under study, the land owners and residents were applied the interview concerning to the occupation report and earth use, as well as the producers’ possible problems concerning to the agricultural aspect and the environmental influence of the drainage. According to the results the following conclusions were drawn: the environmental degradation (subsidence) has been occurred since the opening of the drainage canals by DNOS; the maintenance of the floodgates has not been accomplished; GPR was efficient in identifying the level of the water table and the texture of the soil; the land extension by the Caboclo Bernardo Channel detected by this research corresponds to a small portion of the total area under study (around 5%), 1.157.9 that is 1,157.9 ha; the cocoa stands show unequal productivities even when under either the same soil conditions and other environmental factors; the productivity of the regional cocoa tree seems to be much more related to the pluvial precipitation than to Caboclo Bernardo Channel; fish mortality rather occurs under tiomorphic environments; waters of the Caboclo Bernardo Channel might "improve" the conditions of the tiomorphic (pH < 3.8) after the establishment of the Regency floodgate in the BR-101 highway, especially over the dry period (April to September). At the end of the present work, some considerations and final recommendations were presented on the subject under study.
