With the purpose of looking for new techniques for the integrated handling of termites in Brazilian historical constructions with views to minimize the impact of it ́s action, this work had for objective, to study the occurrence of termites in Brazilian historical constructions supplying subsidies for the integrated handling of this important curse. The studies were developed in the months of May to July of 1999. The constructions were analyzed through the personal collection of information in the city of Salvador, in the streets Ribeiro dos Santos and Luís Viana, both in the area of Pelourinho where took place the "Recovery of the Historical Center of Salvador 6a Stage, Lot 2" and through the questionnaire sending through mail, including the request of samples of the species of termites. The questionamentos were related with the physical conditions of the construction and with the infestation of termites. The data were analyzed nationally and presented as intensity and percentile frequencies. The species of more frequent termite was Nasutitermes tatarendae (59,46%) following by the species Coptotermes havilandi (8,11%). Among the goods, Nasutitermes was the most frequent (40%). In the restorations of the Brazilian historical constructions, 48,21% of the responsibles could not inform the origin of the used wood; 44,65% informed that the used wood came from the North Area, and of this value, 86,20% were acquired in the State of Pará. It was verified the presence of galleries and active colonies of termites in 86,67% and 63,33% of the constructions, respectively. Other wise it was also verified that 90% and 98,34% of the Brazilian historical constructions didn't present any system of control of relative humidity of the air and of temperature. The coming humidity providing of the rain (71,67%) and of hydraulic leaks (38,33%) are important as humidity source where 53,33% of the constructions presented problem of infiltration of water. The wood is the construction material wide spread used in the Brazilian historical constructions and it is also material used in all of the restorations of the historical constructions. Half of the constructions is of private property and the remaining of public property. The attack of the termites in the Brazilian constructions was qualified as extremely serious for 64,15% of the responsible, tends a medium expense for the restoration of U $117,203.65 for construction. Of the constructions that could quantify the duration of the infestation, it was obtained the average of 13,3 ± 3,3 years. It was verified that the galleries more frequently happened in the portals (80%) and roofs (60,83%) and that the part of the construction more attacked by the termites was the roof registered in 50% of the historical constructions. Of the responsible that informed the period of the last reform, 44,06% affirmed that it happened in a smaller period than 10 years while 39% nothing knew how to inform. As the duration of the infestation, 88,24% of the responsible could not quantify the time. As measure of prevention of infestation of termites was verified the prevalence of retreat of material celulósico in 61,29% of the Brazilian historical inspected constructions. In only 53,84% of the constructions, the responsible informed that they accomplished combat to the termites. For exhibition of this synthesis, we can conclude that the problem of termites historical constructions is serious.
