This work had the general order of increasing the level of pedologycal knowlegde basic on the principal classes of highly weathered soils of Minas Gerais State. The especific orders were: a) to characterize chemically, physically and mineralogically these classes of soils, besides characterizing their organic matter; b) to relate the mineralogy and the organic matter of these soils to the phenomena of phosphate adsorption, aggregation and zero point of charge; and c) to determine the effects of the mineralogy and of the organic matter on the color and on the reflectance spectral curves of the selected soils. For this, twelve profiles of Latosols and one of Plintosol have been selected and partially described. The water dispersible clay was affected by the mineralogy and the organic matter of these soils. Soil density was affected by the organic matter and texture. In the soils that underwent drainage restriction there was a decrease in total porosity and water retention. Water retention was smaller in the Dusky Red xiiand Ferriferous Latosols. Most of the soils studied presented acid pH, low contents of exchangeable bases, high aluminum saturation, low contents of available phosphorus and of remnant phosphorus, except for Dark Red Latosol originated from calcareous material and the Dusky Red Latosols. Organic matter was the most contributing component to the negative charges and to the lowering of the PCZES. The genesis of these soils was characterized by a high weathering rate and typical aspects of each class were determined by the parent material, by the climate and elevated water table. The parent material influenced the presence of the kaolinite and was responsible for variations in iron and aluminum oxides contents, while the environment of formation induced the isomorphic substitution of Fe by Al. Concerning phosphate adsorption, gibbsite exerted influence on the maximum phosphate adsorption capacity. The organic matter and the gibbsite affected the iron oxides formation. The most labile and the least reactive forms tended to increase, while the most reactive and soluble forms tended to decrease soil ZPCSE. More oxidic soils presented greater PCEZ than the kaolinitic ones. The aggregation was affected, mainly by aluminium oxides and by humic fractions. The water dispersible clay was affected by chemical, physical, mineralogy and organic characteristics of the soils. The color parameters were influenced, mainly, by hematite, which, in high contents, provoked saturation of these parameters, besides attenuating the effect of the goethite. The spectral curves of the soils were affected by organic matter and by clay minerals, mainly the gibbsite and the iron oxides, mainly the hematite. The soils were divided into three groups, with distinct spectrals behaviors. The principal characteristic that distinguished them was the type and the quantity of the iron oxides present.
