Morfologia floral e expressão sexual em Valeriana scandens L. (Valerianaceae)

Abstract

O gênero Valeriana possui espécies potencialmente medicinais. Valeriana scandens é a espécie do gênero com mais ampla distribuição no Neotrópico. A espécie apresenta polimorfismo floral e inexistem estudos detalhados sobre a morfologia dos seus tipos florais. Além disso, sua expressão sexual é controversa. Os objetivos do presente estudo foram descrever morfológica e funcionalmente os tipos florais de V. scandens e verificar a fenologia reprodutiva e a distribuição desses tipos nos indivíduos e na população estudada, para definir sua expressão sexual. Para tanto, foram realizadas análises de morfometria, histologia, aspectos de biologia floral e do sistema reprodutivo. Os estudos foram conduzidos em população natural na Estação de Pesquisa, Treinamento e Educação Ambiental Mata do Paraíso, em Viçosa, MG, Brasil, nos anos de 2004 e 2005. Além dessa população, foram analisados espécimes de outras localidades do Brasil, Argentina, México e Venezuela, por meio da análise de 49 exsicatas. A floração de V. scandens foi contínua para a espécie como um todo e anual para a população de Viçosa. A espécie apresentou três tipos florais: pistilada e dois tipos de flores perfeitas (P1 e P2). As pistiladas possuíam corola branca, de tamanho intermediário se comparado aos demais, lobos radiais na antese, anteras inclusas, reduzidas, estéreis, maior estilete, estigmas exsertos e saco embrionário do tipo Polygonum, estruturalmente normal. As P1 apresentaram menor corola, também branca com lobos radiais na antese, anteras de tamanho intermediário, subexsertas, férteis, com poucos grãos de pólen viáveis (4,63%±1,26) e em menor número por flor (250,5±72,0), se comparado ao registrado em flores P2, e estilete também subexserto. As P2 possuem a maior corola, de cor creme e com lobos reflexos na antese, anteras exsertas, grandes e férteis, com grãos de pólen viáveis (94,50%±3,23) e maior número por flor (448,5±105,0), estilete incluso e saco embrionário do tipo Polygonum, estruturalmente, normal e semelhante ao das flores pistiladas. Todos os tipos florais apresentaram corola com uma giba, raro duas, e uma epiderme secretora na região ventral da giba (nectário). As flores perfeitas apresentaram protandria. Os três tipos florais formaram frutos com sementes viáveis. As flores P2 foram as mais numerosas, seguidas das pistiladas e P1. Provavelmente, as flores P2 atuam como doadoras de pólen. Entretanto, as flores P1 produziram o maior número de frutos, seguidas das P2 e pistiladas, indicando que atuam como receptoras de pólen. Os tipos florais encontravam-se distribuídos, na população, em morfos: femininos (15%), inflorescências com flores pistiladas; hermafroditas (52%), inflorescências com flores P1 ou com flores P2 ou, ainda, com flores P1 e P2; e ginomonóicos (33%), inflorescências com flores pistiladas e P1, ou com flores pistiladas e P2 ou com os três tipos florais. Portanto, a expressão sexual de V. scandens é ginomonóica-ginodióica, rara entre as angiospermas e inédita em Valerianaceae. Por morfo, a maior frutificação natural foi do hermafrodita com flores P1, seguido do hermafrodita com flores P1 e P2, ginomonóico, feminino e hermafrodita com flores P2. Flores pistiladas de morfos femininos, quando ensacadas na pré-antese, produziram frutos, revelando a presença de agamospermia, sem possibilidade de pseudogamia.

Valeriana is a gender with potential medicine species. Valeriana scandens is the widest geographic distribution species on the Neotropic. The flowers of V. scandens present floral polymorphism and there are no detailed studies about its floral morphology. Moreover, the sexual expression is controversy. The objectives of this work are describe morphological and functionally the floral types of Valeriana scandens and investigate aspects of reproductive phenology and distribution of the floral types on the individual and on the population levels to characterize the sexual expression. Histological and morphometric analysis were made. Aspects of floral biology and reproductive systems were also investigated. The V. scandens analysed population is sited on Estação de Pesquisa, Treinamento e Educação Ambiental Mata do Paraíso, in the municipality of Viçosa, Minas Gerais state, Brazil, and it was observed for two years (2004 and 2005). Others 49 specimens of herbarium from other populations of Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and Venezuela were also analysed. The flowering period of V. scandens was continuous for species and annual for Viçosa population. The species presents three floral types: pistillate and two types of perfect flowers (P1 e P2). Pistillate flowers present an intermediate size white-colored corolla, radial corolla lobes at anthesis, sterile reduced include anthers, the longest style, exsert stigma and Polygonum type embryo sac. The P1 flowers present a white-colored small size corolla, radial lobes at anthesis, fertile subexsert intermediate size anthers, with few viable pollen grains (4,63%±1,26) and lower number of grains per flower (250,5±72,0), if compared with P2, and a subexsert style. The P2 flowers present the big size cream-colored corolla, reflexive corolla lobes at anthesis, fertile large exsert anthers with many viable pollen grains (94,50%±3,23) and higher number of grains per flower (448,5±105,0), include style and Polygonum type embryo sac, morphologically normal and similar to the same structure of the pistillate flowers. All of the floral types present a spur, rarely two, and a secretor epidermis on the ventral region of the spur (nectary). The perfect flowers present protandry. The three floral types set fruits with viable seeds. P2 were the most abundant followed by pistillate and P1 flowers. Probably, P2 flowers act as pollen donors. However P1 flowers produced the highest number of fruits, followed by P2 and pistillate flowers. This fact indicates that the first floral type cited act as pollen receiving. The floral types were distributed, at the population, in female plants (15%) that contain inflorescences with pistillate flowers, hermaphrodite plants (52%), that contain inflorescences with P1 or P2 flowers, or, P1 and P2 flowers and mixed plants (33%) that contains inflorescences with both pistillate and P1 flowers, pistillate and P2 flowers or the three floral types. The sexual expression of Valeriana scandens is gynomonoecious-gynodioecious, a rare sexual expression in angiosperms and unknown for Valerianaceae. Per plant, the highest natural fruit setting was from the hermaphrodite plants with P1 flowers, followed by hermaphrodite plants with flowers P1 and P2, mixed plants, female plants and hermaphrodite plants with P2 flowers. Pistillate flowers of female plants, bagged in pre-anthesis, set fruits, a case of agamospermy without possibilities of pseudogamy.
