Amid the world energy scene and the growing demand for energy efficiency in buildings, new standards, regulations and the use of shading devices have been important allies, such as Quality Technical Requirements for Energy Efficiency Level of the Residential Buildings (QTR-R), which provides an indicator of efficiency of solar protections, called somb . Considering the somb as the focus of this research, the objective is to evaluate the solar protections efficiency indication of QTR-R, regarding to thermal and lighting comfortin a multifamily housing unit (HU), representative of Viçosa (MG).The method is composed of: a) field survey of the natural ventilated HU to identifying the constructive characteristics and conducting measurements of thermal data (dry-bulb temperature (WBT), radiant temperature - Tr and relative humidity - RH) and levels of illumination data (illuminance) of the prolonged occupation environments (living room and bedrooms), occupied and naturally ventilated; b) modeling and calibration of the base case (CB), consisting of the HU without shading devices; c) modeling of reference cases (the base case with adding shading devices as recommended by the QTR-R), and modeling of simulation alternatives (the base case with adding other shading devices in accordance or not with bioclimatic concepts); d) thermal and daylighting simulations of the three groups of modeled cases, by EnergyPlus and Daysim respectively. The data resulting from the calibration of the study HU were statistically analyzed using the mean bias index (viesM) and mean squared error (SME). It was observed that these variations index in the thermal model in seasonal and room levelswere greater than the relative HU, being found in the largest reduction in SME RH 1%. Regarding the calibration process of the lighting model, accomplished through a preliminary evaluation of the dada obtained by measurement and by simulation, was proven that the high rates of SME were due to the fact that the solar radiation levels in the days of measurement was significantly higher than the radiation levels of the weather data file used in the simulation. For this reason, the xixcalibrated case was considered acceptable even with a relatively high SME, with a reduction of the SME in 15.79% compared to the base case. From the thermal simulations was identified the number of hours in thermal comfort and discomfort (for cold or heat). It was found that: the hours which was identified heat discomfort were more sensitive to solar protections; the importance of shading devices recommended by QTR-R were confirmed by quantifying, but no correlation was found between the variable somb from QTR-R and the number of hours on thermal comfort. To the lighting simulation the adequate visual range considered was between 100 lx to 2000 lx, greater values than this generate a visual discomfort by glare. As a result, it was identified that the shading devices of the reference cases reduced the glare discomfort, but increased the level of darkness during the day, and wasnot found any correlation between the variable somb and the numbers of hours in visual comfort, therefore this isn ́t an appropriate variable to describe the natural lighting in residential environments.
