Jatropha curcas L., popularly known as physic nut, is an euforbiacea plant, whose grain is extracted oil with physicochemical characteristics ideal for obtaining biodiesel. Is a rustic plant, tolerant to water deficit, pests and diseases, and adaptable to many soil and climate conditions. Despite these advantages, little is known about the nutrition of this species in cultivation. The objective of the present study was to evaluate growth, yields of grain, oil and protein and the partition of nutrients in populations of J. curcas. The study was conducted in the Experimental Field Diogo Alves de Mello, in the Federal University of Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in the period of November 2011 to February 2012. It was used randomized block design with four replications, being arranged in split-plot. The plots were composed of clones of six J. curcas populations, from the municipalities of Janaúba (J1, J2, J3, J4 and J5) and Bonfim (B1). The subplots were constituted of four phenological phases of sampling (flowering, unripe fruit, yellow fruits and dried fruit), and the subsubplots, of three strata of plant (top, middle and bottom). The plots were composed of four plants with four and a half years of field, spaced 2.5 m from each other. The traits evaluated were plant height, stem diameter, dry weight of leaves and fruits, grain yield, oil and protein levels, concentration and accumulation of nutrients in leaves and fruits and export of nutrients. It was investigated also the degree of association, by correlation, between the nutrient content of the leaves and the fruits, with the grain yield and oil and protein content. It was found that the populations differed for plant height, stem diameter, and leaf dry matter. In the case of phenological stages, only the plant height showed no significant effect. The leaf dry matter showed difference to the strata. Populations differed as to the contents and accumulation of nutrients in leaves and fruits. We also observed that the phenological stages and the strata in the tops of the plants are crucial in achieving the levels and nutrient accumulations, and plants to export large amounts of nutrients of cultivation area for the fruit production. In relation to correlation, association between the levels of nutrients, both the leaves and the fruits, was found. For the leaves, the most significant correlations (0.42 to 0.79) were positive, and for the fruits, it found the same proportion between positive (0.40 to 0.65) and negative (-0.58 to -0.43). For the yield components, only the grain yield was influenced by the leaf Mg content, responsible for the negative effect (- 0.594). In the case of fruit, only productivity and grain protein content were influenced by levels of nutrients. No significant correlation was observed between the yield components. It was concluded that the J5 population stood out among the rest because the largest averages of plant height and stem diameter, while the J2 population presented larger dry weight leaf. Populations did not differ as to the fruits, dry matter production of grain and oil and proteins contents. The fruits should be harvested ripe for presenting the highest levels of oil, protein and dry weight. The location of the fruits on the plant does not influence oil and protein contents of grain. There is genetic variability between populations only for the leaf content of Zn, highlighting the J4 to the highest level. Also found genetic variability for the levels of P, Fe and Cu in fruit, and is the largest mean in the J2 populations to P; J1 to Fe, and J2 and J5 to Cu. All nutrients in their contents and accumulation determined in the leaves and fruits varied with phase phenology. The location of leaves influenced in the contents of N, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe, Mn and Cu, and the contents of N, Ca and Cu in the fruits. Occurrence of genetic variability between populations for the foliar accumulations of N, P, S and Zn, and for the fruits, only Cu presented genetic variability, notably J2, J3, J4, and J5 populations by larger content. The strata influenced in leaf accumulation of all nutrients measured, while in fruit, only the accumulations of N and Ca were influenced. Only the export of Cu was influenced by the population, especially the J5 population for the largest export. Based on export of N: P2O5: K2O by yield of 1,000 kg ha-1 of fruits of J. curcas, we recommend the application of proportional 4.62: 1.70: 4.73. It was concluded that the levels of nutrients of fruits are more sensitive to interactions than the leaf, leaf levels of micronutrients are essential in content of other micronutrients, and that the levels of nutrients in the fruits influence on grain yield and protein content.
