Atrazine dynamics in isolated applications and associated with glyphosate formulations

Herbicide consumption can not be associated with increased productivity, therefore, these agrochemicals are only one of the tools used to rid the crops of the negative interference of weeds. Inadequate use of herbicides without knowledge of their interactions with the environment poses a risk of contamination of soil, air and surface and groundwater. The potential environmental contamination risk of using a herbicide is defined based on the ability of its molecules to be sorbed and degraded and on the soil. This capacity is the result of interactions between herbicide molecules, soil attributes and climatic conditions. Therefore, the concentration of the herbicide in the soil solution and the movement of its molecules in its profile will depend on the sorption of these by the colloids of the soil matrix. This may compromise or guarantee agronomic efficiency and may or may not contaminate groundwater. Atrazine is a herbicide recommended for use in maize and several other crops of great importance in Brazil. Due to the emergence of resistant weed biotypes and the spread of herbicide tolerant species, especially to glyphosate, applications of atrazine in this herbicide mixture have been significantly increased, especially in the maize crop. There are several studies in the literature concerning the sorption and leaching of atrazine in isolated applications, however, the behavior of atrazine when applied in a mixture with glyphosate is not known. In this work using biological and chemical methods sorption, desorption and leaching of the atrazine were evaluated in the Red-Yellow Latosol, when used in isolated applications and mixed with glyphosate formulations. Higher risks of groundwater contamination by atrazine occurred when this herbicide was applied in mixtures with Zapp Qi® and Roundup WG®. Using high performance liquid chromatography, no significant effect on sorption was observed in atrazine soil when this herbicide was applied in a mixture with glyphosate in the different formulations. However, the desorption intensity of the applied atrazine alone differed in relation to the applications in mixture with the glyphosate formulations. It was concluded that the atrazine dynamics in the soil (sorption, desorption, leaching and persistence) can be influenced when this herbicide is applied in mixture as glyphosate in the different formulations.
