Propolis production by Apis mellifera L. (africanized) and an evaluation of the use of pollen determining propolis’ botanical origin
This work had the following goals: make a survey of pollen plants occurring in the area studied; verify if there were differences in propolis productivity, when the apiary is located in shadowed and sunny areas; and verify if the pollen present in propolis can be used as an indicative of botanical origin. The experiments were performed with colonies of africanized honeybees – Apis mellifera – in both the environmental conditions, in the city of Paula Candido- MG. A survey of the flora of the region was made, in which all plants that were flowering during the study were collected. These plants were used for the identification of the pollen types present in the pollen trap and in the propolis. Among the plants found in the region, the family Asteraceae had the greatest number, with 56 species with flowers during the study. There were significative differences in the capacity of production among colonies, independent of the local in which they were installed, indicating a possible increase in production using selection. There were also significative differences in the average productivity among colonies installed in shadowed areas, maybe related to the microclimate. The average productivity varied in the colonies installed in shadowed areas, generating significative results; for the colonies installed in sunny areas, the results were not significative, indicating that there are environmental factors influencing in productivity. Twenty four pollen’s traps of the 10 hives and all of them were found in the propolis. Only plant structures of Baccharis dracunculifolia were found in propolis. The pollen found in propolis can be a contamination, but the metodology used does not allow the identification of where this contamination occurs, if this occurs in the plant, during the transportation, during the manipulation by the bees or inside the hives.
