Knowledge of herbicide-soil interactions is of great importance to secure recommendations from a technical and environmental point of view. In the present work it was performed a study of sorption and desorption, and an evaluation of the half-life and the leaching potential of two herbicides, which are part of the group of imidazolinones (imazethapyr and imazapic) in the following soils: Red-Yellow Latosol (LVA), Dystric Plinthosol (FX), Eutric Gleysol (GX), Humic Cambisol (CH), Red Argisol (PV) and Entisol (RR) with different physicochemical characteristics. The batch equilibrium was the method used in the study of sorption-desorption of these herbicides. The sorption coefficients (K f ) were obtained from the linearized isotherm of Freundlich. In the study of desorption only soils at higher concentration of 15 mg L −1 were used. The percentages of imazethapyr and imazapic were obtained from successive desorption cycles in the optimized equilibrium time in the study of sorption, with solution of CaCl 2 0.01 M without herbicides. In order to evaluate the leaching and the half-life of the herbicides, which were previously mentioned, a multiresidue method (QuEChERS) was developed, validated and applied to the quantitative determination of imazethapyr and imazapic in soil samples using the liquid chromatography coupled to a triple quadrupole analyzer operating in tandem with the mass spectrometry (LC-QqQ-MS/MS), and also electrospray ionization in the positive mode (ESI+). The results of this study about sorption indicated a weak sorption of the imidazolinone herbicides in the soils that had been evaluated. It was possible to find on these ones, values of K f varying from 0.38 to 2.52 mg 1-n kg -1 L n for imazethapyr and from 0.43 to 2.72 mg 1-n kg -1 L n for imazapic. A high percentage of desorption (˃ 70%) was found in Entisol, in Dystric Plinthosol, in Red-Yellow Latosol (for both herbicides), and in Eutric Gleysol (only for imazapic) soils as well, which implies in leaching risks of these imidazolinone herbicides for the groundwater. The lowest desorption (˂ 50%) was found in Humic Cambisol and in Red Argisol (for both herbicides), and in Eutric Gleysol (only for imazethapyr) soils (~50%), indicating that these herbicides show potential to cause injures in the sensitive rotational crops. The soil pH, the oxalate iron content and clay types can affect the sorption–desorption process of imazethapyr and imazapic in the soils that had been evaluated. The imazethapyr’s half-lives were 29.13 and 69.11 days and the imazapic ones were 29.41 and 35.53 days in FX and LVA soils, respectively. Thus, both herbicides are averagely persistent and they show a high leaching potential with detection and quantification up to 20 cm depth in the two soils that had been evaluated. Therefore, the imazethapyr and imazapic have potential for groundwater contamination.
