Considering the possibility of forestation and reforestation projects to generate Emission Reduced Certificates – ERCs and to be eligible before the of Clean Development Mechanism – CDM, the present study objected to quantify the vegetal biomass, estimate the amount of carbon and to analyse the economical viability of the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis M. Arg) and cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) consortium for the generation of ERCs. The quantification of the vegetal biomass was undertaken at the Fazendas Reunidas Vale do Juliana, Igrapiúna, BA, where there were 34 years old rubber trees and 6 years old cacao trees. The quantification of the tree biomass was done through the direct method of destroying 5 rubber trees and 10 cacao in an area of 2,2 hectars. The biomass of the litter was calculated through the collection of the material from the ground. After quantifying the dry biomass, this was converted to carbon, adopting factor 0,5. The calculation of the ERCs and the economical analysis were undertaken for a simulation of the rubber tree- cacao consortium with a planning horizon of 34 years, where the implantation of the rubber tree and cacao tree occurred in the first and fourth year of the project, respectively. The criteria used for economical evaluation were: Net Present Value – NPL, Internal Rate of Return – IRR and Equivalent Annual Value – EAV. It was verified that the amount of carbon in the consortium between the rubber tree of 34 years old and the cacao of 6 years old was of 91,54 t C/ha. From this total amount, 84,65 t C/ha were stored in the rubber tree (68,41 t C/ha in the aerial part and 16,24 t C/ha in the roots), 5,22 tC/ha in the cacao (3,78 t C/ha in the aerial part and 1,44 t C/ha in the roots) and 1,67 tC/ha in the litter. The amount of carbon estimated for the consortium between the 34 years old rubber tree and the 30 years old cacao tree was of 106,91 tC/ha, what corresponds to 393 tCO2/ha. The economical analysis demonstrated that: the management cost of the consortium is the most representative, corresponding to 53% of the updated total cost; the cost of the ERCs projects, per hectars, was equivalent to 0.6% of the total cost, the consortium is viable with and without the ERCs; and the ERCs proportionate an increase of 70% in the NPL. Due to the results found, we can conclude that: the contribution of the rubber tree to the final amount of carbon of the consortium is bigger than the contribution from the cacao and from the litter; the biggest percentage of carbon, in both the rubber tree and the cacao, was concentrated in the canopy the trees; the consortium appears as an economically viable option with or without the ERCs; the ERCs is important for the increase of the economic viability and for the activity’s development in the country; the consortium shows favorable characteristics to the eligibly before the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, in agreement with the CDM, proposed at the Kyoto Protocol.
