This study was carried out in áreas of Caatinga vegetation in the Ecologic Station of Seridó ESEC Seridó municipality of Serra Negra do Norte-RN, Brazil; in the farm Oriente, municipality of Condado-PB, Brazil, and in the farm Laranjeiras, municipality of São José de Espinharas-PB, Brazil. The objectives of the study were: 1) to analyse the floristic composition and the horizontal, vertical and parametric structures of the first two areas; 2) to compare these structures with that ones of other forests of the Northeastern Region, using multivariate analysis (cluster analysis and discriminant analysis), and 3) to estimate volumetric equations, shape factors and hypsometric relations for the Caatinga vegetation. For the floristic and structure studies, in each place 20 plots with 20 × 50 m (1,000 m2), with three inclusion levels were systematically established. In level I the trees with a circunference at ground level CAS ≥ 31 cm were evaluated. In level II, in subplots of 10 × 50 m, the trees with 10 cm ≤ CAS < 31 cm were sampled. In level III, in subplots of 5 × 20 m, the trees with CAS < 10 cm were mesured, and this was the natural regeneration evaluation. The farm Oriente has a greater floristic diversity and productive capacity than the ESEC Seridó, and the floristic similarity is high between the two areas. In the level II of inclusion the greatest number of individuals, families and species were found. The two most important families in number of individuals in the ESEC Seridó and farm Oriente were Leguminosae and Euphorbiaceae. The species with greatest importance value in the ESES Seridó were Caesalpinia pyramidalis, standing deads, Aspidosperma pyrifolium, Croton sonderianus, Mimosatenuiflora and Combretum Cf. leprosum; and in the farm Oriente they were Crotn sonderianus, Caesalpinia pyramidalis, standing desds, Bauhinia cleilantha, Combretum cf. leprosum and Piptadenia stipulacea. In the ESEC Seridó and farm Oriente Croton sonderianus was the species which showed the greatest density and Caesalpinia pyramidalis showed the greatest dominance. In the ESEC Seridó the species with the greatest regeneration index was Croton sonderianus, and in the farm Oriente it was Bauhinia cheilantha. Some species were not sampled in the natural regeneration: Cnidoscolus guercifolins, Myracroruon urundeuva, Pseudobombax marginatum, manihot glaziovii and Senna macranthera in the area of the ESEC Seridó; and Caesalpinia ferrea, Sapium sp., Guapira sp., Tocoyena sellowiana, Cochlospermum insigne and indeterminate 3 (pau-serrote) and 4 (rompe- gibão) in the farm Oriente. The techniques of clustering and discriminant analyses were effective to compare forests from different geographic locations. To estimate the volumetric equations and shape factors data were collected in the farm Laranjeiras. For the adjustment of the hypsometric models data were collected in the farm Laranjeiras, in the ESEC Seridó and in the farm Oriente. In the cubsture 100 sample trees were measured with a diameter ramge at ground level DAS of 3.3. to 43.8 cm resulting in two volume equations, one with the independent variable DAS ( R 2 = 0.994), both with normally distributed residuals, showing a good fitting accuracy. The estimated average shape factors were statistically different by classes of diameter, being the shape factor of 0.76 for trees with DAS < 20 cm and one of 0.91 for trees with DAS ≥ 20 cm. For the hypsometric relation five models were adjusted for the three sets of trees measured: farm Laranjeiras, 100 trees ( R 2 from 0.575 to 0.783); ESEC Seridó, 1021 trees ( R 2 from 0.642 to 0.673); and farm Oriente, 1903 trees ( R 2 from 0.403 to 0.425). Due to the great variability of the Caatinga forest, the models adjusted for the sampled data of the plots did not show good accuracy levels, whwn the distribution of percentage of residuals were observed. However, when data were from trees selected by diameter classes, the adjustments were satisfactory.
