Soybeans are sensitive to drought stress, and in areas where there is the lack of rain several agronomic and physiological characters are affected by water stress. The water deficit can influence the opening of immature pods. Unlike standard common dehiscence, opening immature pods occurs in the R6 stage of development, can this openness be caused by different reasons from common dehiscence, thus it is essential to know the soybean cultivars behavior as its plasticity front hydrical stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of water stress on agronomic traits, physiological, and the opening of immature pods in soybean. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at the Federal University of Viçosa. The experimental design was randomized blocks in a 3x4 factorial design with three replications. The treatments consisted of the combination of three soybean cultivars with four levels of water stress (0, 10, 20 and 30 days). We used two conditions of water availability in the soil, one without water restrictions, where the soil was maintained at field capacity (-33 kPa) and the other with water restriction (-900 kPa). Water restriction was imposed from the R3 growth stage. We evaluated the characters height, number of nodes, cycle, number of seeds per plant, weight of 100 seeds, volume of seeds, number of seeds per pod, production and length, height and width of pods and seeds. It was also evaluated physiological parameters such as photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and the intrinsic efficiency of water use. The physiological processes of the plants were affected. There was a reduction of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance and increased intrinsic efficiency of water use with water deficit. Water restriction from the R3 stage reduced the growth and development of the plant, leading to production of smaller pods, fewer seeds per plant and lower production. There was an increase in the size of seeds with the intensification of stress. Cultivars 1 and 2 in treatments that went for 20 and 30 days of water stress showed the opening immature pods. Cultivar 3 was resistant to opening immature pods even in the worst conditions of drought. The reduction of the pod and increased grain size contributed to opening of immature pods in susceptible cultivars.
