The work presented here is characterized as a case study in a municipality located in the Zona da Mata eastern Minas Gerais. The choice by the city studied was made because it is the greatest expression of the production and sale of fresh market tomatoes that region. Another element that justifies the choice is the fact that much of the tomato production is carried out by farmers, sharecroppers, partners or owners. Also, one of the main challenges identified by public health systems and extension of the city and the region is the heavy use of pesticides, especially in the tomato crop. Thinking in this context, it was necessary to understand the issues related to the use of pesticides in tomato crops by these actors. Thus, the research aimed to analyze the risks of pesticide use by farmers in tomato crops in the municipality, in order to systematize information and subsidies for educational outreach of public services in the municipality and the region. The working hypothesis generated was that tomato growers family had some knowledge about the risks they are exposed to intensive use of pesticides, bhowever, should this production as the main source of income, despite the environmental risks that the current model of production that brings culture. To conduct the research, the first step was a literature and document review on the subject and in a second stage, the research focused on the field study of the issues related to the use of pesticides in the production of tomato with family the farmers. The field study confirmed the situation of intensive and indiscriminate use of pesticides in the city studied, with emphasis on the cultivation of tomato. This context has implications including at local and regional level, as tomato production in the region is expanding and with it the associated pesticide use is also increasing. As for the perception of the risks and dangers associated with pesticide use, farmers interviewed confirmed the initial hypothesis, as presented in their statements, the perception of risk and danger associated with the use of these substances, but a clear perception of harm to human health.
