Classroom interaction: analysis of repair and correction in the teaching-learning process
This research aimed to analyze the organization of repair and correction operations in speech-in-interaction in the classroom, more precisely in a seminar presentation, as well as to describe how the construction of knowledge occurred in the face of these strategies. To do so, it counted on following theoretical and methodological approaches: the Ethnomethodological and Conversation analysis (SACKS, SCHEGLOFF, JEFFERSON, 1977), considering the participation of the students and the teacher in the teaching-learning process in a geography class in the course of Agroecology of a Minas Gerais' technical school. The corpus of analysis of the research was composed by the recording and transcription of the geography doubled classes. Data analysis considered the construction or reproduction of knowledge through the use of repair operations. The results demonstrated 250 repair occurrences initiated and carried out by the problem source's speaker; 4 of repair initiated by the problem source's speaker and carried out by the other; 8 of the repair initiated by the other and carried out by the problem source's speaker; and only 1 repair started and carried out by the other. It was also pointed out that some categories of repairs were used in face-threat situations, and in others to construct common meaning among the interaction participants, so that they contributed to the co-construction of knowledge in the teaching-learning process. It is noteworthy that a sequential organization of repair operation was identified in this classroom, characterized by the result of the repair being given in fourth position. This means that the teacher did an initiation of the repair, identifying a source of problem in the student's speech; then a new initiation of repair occurred by the student; later on, there was the repetition of the initiation by the teacher; and finally the specific student or another one provided the answer and ended the shift. This organization differs from the repair studies described in the literature that usually occur until the third position. This can happen due to the fact that the analyzed classes consisted of seminar presentations, in which the students had to demonstrate an understanding of what was asked by the teacher, in order to finish the enunciation started by him. The teacher, on the other hand, did not provide the answer readily, but instead argued the students in order to build the knowledge together with them. Therefore, it is considered that the findings of this work may contribute to the research in the ACE field, especially for those interested in investigating repair operations into the speech-in-interaction context in the classroom aiming to understand the teaching and learning process.
