Based on literature information, equations were adjusted viewing the development of an alternative system for the currently used soil analysis interpretation tables and fertilizer recomendations. This system (SIR) was created in order to permit the interpretation of information related to nutrient availability in the soil, nutrient accumulation in maize plants and NPK recommendation. A common flow chart was developed for all nutrients. This flow chart is characterized by a sequence of calculations, with VI steps. The first step (I) utilizes the expected grain yield for calculation of the vegetative dry mass yield. In Step II the nutrient level or the biologic utilization coefficient (BUC) of dry matter and grains is estimated. In Step III, it is obtained the nutrient demand by dividing vegetative dry mass and grain yield by their respective BUC’s. In Step IV, the nutrient demand is divided by the plant’s nutrient recuperation rate in order to estimate the critical level of the nutrient for a given yield. The nutrient supply by the soil is indicated by the nutrient concentration/extractor recuperation rate relationship (D extractor nutrient recuperation/D applied nutrient dose). Step VI represents the difference between the crop’s nutrient demand and the amount supplied by the soil, giving the fertilizer recommendation when this difference is positive. The method used for calculating soil available N depends on variables such as organic matter (OM) mineralization rate and the potentialmineralization of OM nitrogen. The N supply through crop residues is also computed by the RIS. The values estimated by the System were compared with the recommendation tables used in the Minas Gerais and São Paulo States, in Brazil. There was a tendency of higher recommendations by the System than by currently used tables. This difference can be attributed to the fact that SIR considers in the calculation of recommendation, the nutrients present in the vegetative dry matter as well as the exported nutrients. After the first year, if the area is cropped again with maize, the nutrients contained in the organic residues of the preceeding year can be accounted as nutrient supply by the soil, reducing fertilizer recommendations.
