The objectives of this study were: a) evaluate the effect of selection for the number, height, diameter of the stalks and BRIX at the first selection phase (T1) in sugarcane; b) estimate the genotypic correlation coefficients among characters at the second selection phase (T2) and for a same character between phases T1 and T2; c) estimate the genetic parameters to predict genotypic values for the selection of genotypes at phases T1 and T2 using REML/BLUP; d) verify the selection efficiency at T1 by the coincidence with selection at T2. At phase T1, consisting of genotypes from the crossing between the cultivars RB72454 and RB83102, 130 genotypes were sampled and evaluated for stalk numbers, which were evaluated at phase T2. The 130 clones were distributed into the five treatments and assayed under the randomized block design with 5 replicates. Four characters at phase T1 and eight at phase T2 were evaluated. The height and diameter of the stalks were the most promising characters for genotype selection at phase T1, since they showed both higher genetic control and selective coincidence with phase T2. Those genotypes that did not show at least 5 stalks in stool at phase T1 were rejected. At phase T2, the stalk yield showed high genotypic correlation with stalk tons/ hectare, therefore the indirect selection can be used. The genotypes RB987620, RB987572 and RB987561 showed the highest predicted genotypic values for BRIX yield. |
