The relationships between morphology and digestive function/diet of neotropical primates is of paramount importance to understand the physiological and ecological mechanisms of these animals. In the present study, were analyzed anatomical aspects of the body and digestive tract, as well as the food content of hybrid marmosets (Callithrix sp.), captured in small forest fragments in the city of Viçosa – MG in the dry and rainy seasons, considering that the seasonal variations interfere in the availability of food and quality of diet. Regarding the body parameters studied, there was no significant difference between marmosets of dry and rainy seasons. In relation to the digestive tract, the diameter of the ascending colon and the cecum were larger in animals the dry season when compared to the rainy season's marmosets. These differences may be related to the diet, being that, was observed that the marmosets of the dry season presented the gum as the main food item, while the animals of the rainy season consumed mainly arthropods and vegetable remains. Thus, the specializations of these fragments may be the result of an adaptive response to gum ingestion for better energetic utilization, since this food item consists of complex polysaccharides with low digestibility, requiring greater retention of the alimentary content in these segments to increase absorption by the action of the microorganisms. The histological, histochemical and histometric parameters of the large intestine, specifically the cecum and colon, were also analyzed to corroborate the anatomical research. It was observed that the thickness of the parietal layers, the number of enteroendocrine cells, and goblet cells in the colon and AB- positive in the cecum, were more expressive in the large intestine of the rainy season's marmosets. Such observations favor the control of intestinal secretion and motility, contributing to a more rapid absorption of the food ingested, thus, the time of passage of the food bolus is faster, since these marmosets were basically insectivorous. However, there was more development of the crypts of the epithelium, as well as the number of goblet cells PAS-positive in the cecum, and the height of the colonocytes and thickness of their striated edged, both in the cecum and in the colon, in the dry season marmosets, this reflects in the greater absorption that these animals need to obtain energy during the gomivory, increasing the retention of the food in these segments of the large intestine, consequently, diminishing the peristalsis in those regions, favoring better absorption of the nutrients by the microbial fermentation and protection against the abrasive action of the fibers. Thus, the large intestine of the marmosets have morphological adaptations for the digestion of dietary fibers, under the influence of seasonality and consequent food availability. Since, the increased intake of gum by dry season animals, because they were exposed to a small variety and amount of food during this period, would be a compensation for the low intake of arthropods.
