Confirmation and physiological characterization of glyphosate resistant Digitaria insularis

Since the introduction of glyphosate resistant crops, this herbicide has been applied repetitively per year in the same area and cropping season. This practice contributes to the selection of resistant weed biotypes. Species such as Digitaria insularis, which have great dissemination capacity, can infest large areas in a short period of time, leading to higher consumption of herbicides and high crop production costs. This research consisted in the identification and physiological characterization of glyphosate resistant D. insularis biotypes. The glyphosate efficacy was evaluated in three D. insularis biotypes (MT, BA and GO) with suspect of resistance (R) and one susceptible (S) biotype as control (MG), by means of dose-response assays, as well as their physiological characteristics (photosynthetic rate, gas exchange, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate and water use efficiency) using an infrared gas analyzer (IRGA), aiming to establish physiological patterns that allowed to discriminate the glyphosate resistance of D. insularis. The biotypes from MG and GO were characterized as being susceptible to glyphosate, meanwhile the MT and BA biotypes as being resistant to this herbicide. The two latter biotypes showed a high level of resistance to glyphosate with resistance factors ranging from 3.1 to 26.7, and the GO biotype presented potential to develop it. The glyphosate susceptibility ranking of the D. insularis biotypes was MG < GO < MT < BA. The greatest differences on the physiological alterations of D. insularis were observed at 360 and 720 g ha -1 of glyphosate, meanwhile at 1440 and 2880 g ae ha -1 , these were similarly affected. It was concluded that the D. insularis biotypes MG and GO were susceptible to glyphosate, while the MT and BA biotypes as being resistant this herbicide. In addition, it was not possible to establish physiological patterns that allowed discriminating the resistance to glyphosate of D. insularis using IRGA.
